Why Gateway is needed?

In the M3 type of connected objects, we are connecting a gateway mini-computer to the object instead of directly connecting it to the server via a USB. Why? In what way does it help or is better than a direct to USB connection?

Several reasons for that. The first one is the fact that it is a large scale testbed and that to deploy more than a hundred objects in a building it is impossible to do it via USB. Another very important reason is to have a different radio neighborhood (ex: multi-hop topology) between the nodes. So you need to have nodes spaced apart from each other. Last reason which is the consequence of the first two is that we need a mini-computer to manage experiments on the nodes like the monitoring (consumption, radio) which is managed by the gateway.
